The Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association has introduced an initiative geared for the millennial generation: HYPE (Hospitality’s Young Professionals & Entrepreneurs).
HYPE made its official debut on Tuesday, April 26 with a launch party at Sky Waikiki, featuring entertainment, door prizes, and food. Entertainment was provided by rising millennial star Josh Tatofi, who recently performed his original compositions at the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo. Josh is the son of Tiva Tatofi, former bass player for musical group Kapena, who made a special guest appearance at the event. Also making guest appearances and speaking at the event were Kelly Hoen, general manager of the MODERN Honolulu, whose management team at her hotel is comprised mainly of members of the millennial generation, and 34 year-old Eran Ganot, successful head coach of the University of Hawaii Men’s Basketball team. The event was attended by a sold out gathering of 200 people. HYPE membership is open and free to anyone under age 40 who is employed by an HLTA member, regardless of his or her position in the company. Others may sign up for a free newsletter and attend events at an additional cost. All young professionals – not just those who work directly with the hotel industry – are encouraged to join.
